Your Guide to the Pilates Megaformer

New to Lagree or looking to brush up on some basics of the equipment? You’re in the right place.

Lagree is a workout unlike any other. It combines traditional Pilates, strength training, and cardio into a unique workout done on its very own machine, called the Megaformer.

This machine and this workout were created to sculpt lean muscles, boost metabolism, and improve fitness beyond your Pilates Platinum classes.

So what exactly is the Megaformer? It sounds and looks intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, it will become your BFF.

The Megaformer

At the heart of any Lagree Pilates studio is the Megaformer, a machine that combines a Pilates reformer, a weightlifting bench, and a cable pulley system to create its own approach to fitness.

Created by Sebastien Lagree, the Megaformer is made to give you a low-impact, high-intensity workout that targets multiple muscle groups at the same time.

Here are the key features and parts of the Megaformer.

Moving Carriage

The main part of the machine is called the carriage, and that’s where you’ll spend most of your class. It glides on rails and offers resistance with different springs that have different weight loads.

Springs

Speaking of springs, these are essential to your Lagree workout. The Megaformer has adjustable springs that give you the resistance that builds that Pilates body. Different spring settings allow you to modify your class to be easier or more difficult.

Handlebars and Straps

Part of the machine is also handlebars and straps that you can hold onto with your hands or attach to your feet to use for various exercises.

Platform

There are two platforms on the Megaformer. The front one sits on top of the springs and can be lifted to change springs underneath.

The back platform is stationary and used for all kinds of movements. .

Bungee Cord

The bungee cord is an additional piece that can be used for added resistance and even to challenge your balance, too.

Other Equipment You May Use in Your Pilates Class

While the above is all part of the Megaformer, you may find your Pilates instructor incorporates other equipment into your class.

Here are some of the most common things you’ll see.

Resistance Bands

These may serve as a way to add even more resistance to your workout.

Free Weights

Free weights are a great way to take your upper body workouts to the next level or add upper body workouts to lower body workouts.

Pilates Ring

This ring is a great addition to work your inner thighs more as well as your upper arms when doing specific Pilates moves.

As you can see, the Megaformer is quite the machine. And if you’ve ever been on one, then you know the power it has and the incredible challenge it can give your body that comes with all the best rewards (hello, long and lean muscles!)
